I have started to stitch the leaves on the Tipsy Thistle, they are outlined first in Stem stitch in four different colours of Appleton's crewel wool, before being filled in with Chain stitch amongst other things. I love the choice of colours for this project, and am enjoying working on it, but sadly I have to start on something new! Here it is before I set it aside for a few weeks...
You may remember that I am taking lessons in embroidery, the class officially starts again in September, but Sophie has kindly agreed to teach a few of us for a couple of days over the summer. I know what I am doing with this kit (sort of!) so I decided to try and learn something new during lesson time. I would really like to try Canvas work (I think it is called Needlepoint in America?) I did stitch these two cushions in tent stitch years ago, and have to admit I thought that was all you could do with canvas, a bit like when I thought cross-stitch was the only type of embroidery!
I have since discovered that there are hundreds of stitch combinations you can use and I want to try some of them! You are also not limited to just using wool! who knew?? (everyone except me probably!) I plan to try and adapt a cross stitch chart, I will let you know how it goes, but for now will leave you with a picture of some of the luscious threads I want to incorporate...
It's always a pleasure to hear of someone else discovering the vast range of threads and stitches available - I wish you hours of entertainment and stitching adventures!
ReplyDeleteI agree, who knew?? Here in America it is Needlepoint, which I have been thinking about getting back into again as well. I had done it years ago. I will be looking forward to seeing the different stitches and threads you plan to use.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful projects! Looks like you are having a lot of fun!
ReplyDeleteYour thistle piece looks wonderful! And how exciting about the teaching and your project! I think sometimes the craft is called needlepoint, but it's also called other things here in the US. I do love the various stitches one can use. Looking forward to seeing what you stitch!
ReplyDeleteI used to do needlework but I never got into it a lot, My daughter is doing it though now and she love it. - your work is looking great.
ReplyDeleteI'm really enjoying following your embroidery journey.
ReplyDeleteWould love to try the robin you stitched a while back. Do you know if it is for sale anywhere?
I did needlepoint for years and always loved the stitch guide by Jo Ippolito Christensen called "The Needlepoint Book". You can get some interesting effects with different stitches. My very first blog featured the last needlepoint I did. Have fun!
ReplyDeleteI made a tent stitch bookmark and thout I had needlepoint pegged! I really want to try my hand at a canvas, thereis some amazing work out there. I'll enjoy watching you stitch yours
