Look what I found...

I have spent the best part of this week, cleaning and sorting out my small sewing room; I have lots of things half-done or not started and I am trying to be a little ruthless in deciding what I will realistically ever want to finish. Quite a few pieces of fabric have gone back into my stash; now I am learning embroidery I seem to have less and less time for patchwork and quilting. However one project I did come across, and one which I most definitely want to finish, is my version of the Welsh quilt, the original of which is held in the V & A. I saw this quilt at the quilts exhibition a few years ago and came home and drafted my own version, I am hand quilting this with wool wadding/batting. I don't know when I will finish it, but it feels good to be hand quilting again!

  1. Hi Elaine, Like minds! I've just ordered a new quilting hoop and some Presencia no.8 threads so that I can get back to hand quilting using big stitch. I love your traditional hand quilting especially the last photo which looks just like a butterfly.

  4. Thanks so much for sharing both sides of your Welsh quilt. I've made a small one but without seeing the real thing it's was hard to figure out some of the quilting techniques. It is beautiful. There is nothing quite so appealing to the eye as hand quilting.

  6. What a great quilting project! The quilting design is lovely - very clever of you to draft it all. Is it a similar quilting pattern as on the original? Looking forward to seeing what you do on the large cream outer border :)

  10. Oh my! I'm SO excited to see this. I LOVE this old Welsh quilt. In fact, I'm in the process of trying to draw up a Lap Quilt version it - a present for my Sister-in-Law's 70th birthday in 3 weeks time (last minute idea). Drafting isn't one of my 'strengths' (understatement!), and I've been challenged trying to get the size of the blocks/borders in the right proportion. I've drawn up about 4 versions so far and haven't been able to get the finished size right. Would you be willing to share a few dimensions? ... the size of your ... central square 'medallion' and the width of each border - this info would be enough to get me on the right track.
    Many thanks (in anticipation).
