Russian Sunflowers

I like to have a take along project on the go at all times, something that can be easily picked up to work on when I visit quilting friends. My current project is a lap quilt made of Russian Sunflower blocks; quilt blocks often have lots of different names, this block is also known as Sunburst among others. I am hand piecing these and have chosen fabrics for the blocks and backgrounds but will wait until all the blocks are pieced before choosing sashing and borders. I only work on this project an hour or two a week when I am out of the house, it is amazing how it all adds up!

  1. So beautiful, Elaine! Love the sunflower design. Quilting intrigues me so, I should try sometime. Do you stitch free hand?

    1. Hi Krista! Not quite sure what you mean by free hand? When I am hand piecing I mark the seam allowance on the back of the piece with a small dot at the corner, I then stitch dot-to-dot which keeping everything lined up and ensures all the pieces will fit!

Jinny Beyer has lots of tips and free lessons on hand piecing on her website:

  2. Those are fantastic blocks! Great fabric choices, too. What book are you using for the pattern?

    1. I don't really have a pattern ;0) The picture is of a quilt that was featured in QNM years ago called sunburst, I kept it because I loved the block & the colours. A few years ago I bought the Marti Mitchell Sunburst template set, I love it! I rotary cut the pieces and they fit together beautifully. The blocks finish 12" I will probably set them with wide sashing & a border like the picture.
